Wall Hung Table

by April S. Fields

Problem: Small foyer and narrow entry hall in small apartment. Electric circuit box on wall.

Solution: Wall hung table and art to cover the electrc box.

Before

After

This very simple idea was born of the need to jazz up an entryway and still stay on a slim budget. In fact, I built the wall hung table out of scraps in my work shop and the accessories were bought for less than $30 at a discount store.

Overall the dimensions are: height - 24", length - 36", top - 5 1/2" deep, base - 1 1/2" deep. The finish is white crackle which not only gives it an antique architectural element, it is also quite forgiving and quick. No need to spend days on a furniture grade finish.

I also clipped the outside corners of the top because the space was so limited in the hallway that I wanted to prevent the possibility of someone accidentally snagging a hip on the pass by.

I added, as an afterthought, two drapery rod finials on the underside just for fun.

It hangs like a picture with eyebolts and wire but the eyebolts are resessed inside the frame of the base so that the whole thing snugs up to the wall. Though it isn't heavy, it takes two (30 lb) mollies spaced 24" apart to hold it in place.

I also drilled a hole in the top for the light cord to drop into. Fortunately there was a receptical directly underneath the spot where I wanted to hang it and the excess cord hides nicely inside the base.

Add a mirror or art and a narrow buffet lamp and some accessories and you have transformed a dull, dark entry into a warm and friendly welcome for all, both residents and guests.
