Welcome
to the Library in Making Home
When I was four years old I would sit for hours staring
at the pages of a book, willing the words to speak to me. I don't recall
the moment I first began to read, I only know I have never gotten over
it. - April S Fields
Pale As The Moon
by Donna Campbell

Chapter Book - Recommended reader age - 10-12 to adult
Gray Squirrel is a young Paspatank Native American girl whose
tribe thrives on a small Outer Banks Island off the North Carolina
coast in the late fifteen hundreds. While her family is summering
on the barrier islands, away from their permanent home farther
inland, Gray Squirrel happens upon a wild colt, separated from
it's herd during a hurricane. The colt is a descendent of the
horses left behind by Spanish explorers.
This well-crafted fiction quickly scoops up the reader and
transports not only into the past, but also with vivid description
surrounds with sound, taste and a clear, inviting view of coastal
life. Though the story is based on a true historical mystery
about an English Colony that disappeared, Campbell's creative
interpretation of "what might have happened" makes
Pale As The Moon, not only a good read, but entices the reader
to question what really did happen, never suspecting a history
lesson is at hand.
Included is a concise bibliography and study questions for
teachers who might want to include this book in their curriculum.
Topics covered include, Native American Life, Early American
Colonists and Explorers and the history of the Wild Ponies of
North Carolina.
Pale as the Moon, published by Coastal Carolina Press, is a
publication of the Carolina Young People series.
